Lore & Background
Vinnie Gognitti is a small-time mobster who works as a legbreaker and errand boy for the Punchinello family. He is introduced in *Max Payne* (2001) as a nervous, talkative informant who provides Max with information in exchange for protection. Despite his cowardice, Vinnie is cunning and manipulative, often double-crossing those around him to save his own skin. He is known for his distinctive high-pitched voice and his habit of rambling when under pressure, which makes him both an annoyance and a source of dark humor in the grim world of the game. His survival instinct is so sharp it borders on the supernatural — he always has a backup plan, even if that plan is just to beg, lie, or run.
In Their Own Story
In *Max Payne 2*, Vinnie Gognitti is the underboss of the Punchinello Crime Family. He is trying to monopolize the black market arms trade and sees Vlad as a threat. Max heads to Vlad's restaurant to question him about a raid, only to find him under attack by mobsters led by Vinnie. After saving Vlad, he claims that Vinnie is trying to monopolize the black market arms trade. Later, Vlad raids his restaurant to kill Vinnie. Max manages to save Vinnie from Vlad's men, and the two head to Mona's hideout to seek her help. However, Vlad ambushes them, murdering Vinnie and shooting Max for killing Winterson.
Reader's Guide
Vinnie Gognitti is a minor antagonist in *Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne*. He is first encountered in the chapter 'A Criminal Mastermind,' where he hides in a janitor's closet and provides Max with information about the Punchinello family's operations. Vinnie is not a combatant; his role is primarily narrative, serving as a source of exposition and comic relief. He appears in a few cutscenes and gameplay sequences where Max must protect him from other mobsters. Vinnie's cowardice and self-serving nature make him an unreliable ally, but his knowledge of the underworld is valuable. He is memorable for his distinctive voice and his ability to talk his way out of danger, often betraying others to save himself. Vinnie's interactions with Max highlight the game's noir themes of desperation and moral ambiguity — in a world of violence and corruption, even a lowly weasel can outlast the wolves.
