Jack Lupino
The Valkyr-crazed founder of a doomsday cult.
Jack Lupino is a major antagonist in the original *Max Payne* video game. A former NYPD detective turned psychotic cult leader, he founded a doomsday cult that worships the experimental drug Valkyr and drives the game's conspiracy. Lupino is infamous for his erratic, raving sermons, his addiction to Valkyr, and his role in the kidnapping of Max's former partner, Alex Balder—though Balder was actually murdered by a hitman working for the Punchinello crime family.

Lore & Background
Jack Lupino was once a decorated NYPD detective, but his life spiraled into madness after a series of traumatic events and exposure to the experimental drug Valkyr. He founded his own cult obsessed with the apocalypse and the consumption of Valkyr. Lupino believed the drug allowed him to see the 'truth' behind reality, and he preached a gospel of destruction and rebirth. His sermons, recorded on audio tapes scattered throughout the game, reveal a man consumed by paranoia and visions of a coming war—his voice cracking with feverish intensity as he promises his followers that the world will burn and be reborn through blood.
In Their Own Story
The rain hammers against the stained-glass windows of the abandoned church. Inside, Jack Lupino paces before a flickering altar, his voice a ragged whisper that builds to a scream. 'The truth is a jagged pill,' he hisses to his drugged followers, 'and you will choke on it!' He clutches a syringe filled with Valkyr, his eyes wild. 'The world is a lie, and Max Payne is the bullet that will shatter it!' Outside, a lone figure in a leather coat steps through the broken doors, a Beretta in hand. The sermon is about to end.
Reader's Guide
Jack Lupino is the first major boss encountered in *Max Payne*. He is the leader of the Inner Circle cult, and the player must track him down to avenge the murder of Alex Balder and learn more about the conspiracy surrounding Valkyr. Lupino is encountered in a derelict church, where he delivers a manic sermon before attacking. Gameplay-wise, the fight against Lupino is a chaotic shootout. He is not a bullet-sponge boss; instead, he is protected by numerous cultist henchmen. The player must use the environment—pews, pillars, and the altar—for cover while employing Bullet Time to take down the waves of enemies. Lupino himself will occasionally fire at the player, but the real challenge is surviving the onslaught of his followers. After clearing the room, Lupino is killed in a cutscene, not through direct combat—Max shoots him in the head as he cowers behind the altar, a grim punctuation to the cult leader's apocalyptic ranting. This encounter sets the tone for the game's blend of noir storytelling and frantic third-person shooter action.

- The audio tapes of Lupino's sermons were recorded by actor Joe Rohan, who also voiced other characters in the game.
- Lupino's church is one of the first levels to introduce the game's signature Bullet Time mechanic in a boss fight scenario.
- The character's design—a disheveled suit, wild eyes, and a syringe—was intended to visually represent the destructive effects of Valkyr addiction.
