Uzi

A compact storm of 9 mm lead for when the hallway gets too narrow for a rifle.

Uzi

The Uzi is a 9 mm submachine gun that appears as an available weapon in the Max Payne video game series. Developed in the real world by Uzi Micro UGAL, the compact full-auto SMG has been a fixture of action fiction for decades, and in the Max Payne games it slots into the submachine-gun tier as a high-rate-of-fire, moderate-damage option for close-quarters combat.

Across the entries in which it appears, the Uzi serves as a mid-tier automatic weapon: more controllable than a shotgun at range, but less damaging per round than a rifle. It rewards players who prefer sustained fire in tight corridors, stairwells, and the rain-slicked alleys that define the series' urban settings.

Lore & Background

The Uzi has long been associated with urban close-quarters engagements, and the Max Payne series leans into that reputation. In the rain-drenched New York of the first game and the sun-bleached, neon-lit São Paulo of the third, the weapon reads as a working-man's automatic: unglamorous, reliable, and devastating at the distances where most of the series' firefights actually take place. It is the gun a bodyguard or a low-level enforcer would reach for, not the hero's sidearm, and the games reflect that by making it a pickup rather than a starting weapon.

Mechanically the Uzi sits between the pistol and the assault rifle in the damage-per-second hierarchy. Its full-auto trigger and relatively low recoil make it forgiving for players who favor holding the trigger down in tight spaces, while its magazine capacity and moderate damage per round keep it from overshadowing the more powerful long guns available later in each game. In Max Payne 3's more expansive level design, it remains a solid choice for the closer encounters that punctuate the longer sightlines the open areas demand.

The weapon also fits the series' noir tone. Max Payne is not a special-ops operative; he is a broken man with a .38 and a grudge. When he picks up a Uzi, it is because the situation escalated and the gun was there. That mundanity—the Uzi as a tool grabbed off a dead guy's hip rather than a trophy—matches the series' grounded, weary characterisation of its protagonist.

In Their Own Story

The stairwell smelled of wet concrete and old blood. Max didn't check the body at the bottom of the flight; he just took the Uzi from the man's hand, felt the weight of it—lighter than the .38, shorter, meaner. Rain hammered the fire-escape above, turning the whole corridor into a grey smear. He racked the charging handle, felt the bolt slide home, and the magazine was still warm.

Three floors up, the door was already open. He didn't need to see the silhouettes to know they were waiting. He stepped through, let the first burst go wide, felt the recoil shove the muzzle up, and corrected. The Uzi barked in short, angry sentences. The room filled with the smell of cordite and the particular sharpness of 9 mm casings hitting tile. When it was over he stood in the doorway, breathing hard, the gun still warm in his grip, and the rain kept falling like it had all night and would keep falling all night.

Reader's Guide

FIREARMS — Submachine Guns

Uzi (Max Payne, 2001) In-game stats: Full-auto SMG; moderate damage per round; high rate of fire; low-to-moderate recoil. Uses the shared SMG ammunition pool. First found: Available as a weapon pickup in mid-game levels; not a starting weapon. Flavor: The gun that was already in the room when the fight started. You don't choose it; it chooses you.

Uzi (Max Payne 3, 2012) In-game stats: Full-auto SMG; similar damage and fire-rate profile to the first game's entry; effective at close to mid range. Uses SMG rounds. First found: Picked up from enemies or found in weapon caches across São Paulo levels. Flavor: In a city this big, there's always a Uzi within arm's reach. You just have to be fast enough to grab it before the next guy does.

Note: The Uzi does not appear as a distinct, separately named weapon in every entry of the series. Players should check the in-game weapon roster for the specific title they are playing, as the SMG lineup varies between entries. In entries where a Uzi is not present, a comparable full-auto SMG fills the same tactical niche.
